Ivanovsky Convent

The Convent of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist is one of Pskov's older monastic foundations, established in the 12th century on the high bank above the Pskova River. The main church, rebuilt in stone in the 16th century, is a good example of the Pskovian Romanesque style — compact, whitewashed, with the low stepped arches and unadorned walls that characterise this local tradition.

The convent is active again after decades of Soviet closure and the grounds are open to visitors. The setting on the riverbank is among the most atmospheric in the city, particularly in the early morning when mist sits on the water below. The interior of the cathedral contains some recently restored medieval frescoes.
