Trapeznaya occupies a vaulted stone cellar near the Krom and serves dependable traditional Russian food — borsch, pelmeni, blini with various fillings, roasted meats, and the occasional appearance of local fish. The setting is atmospheric without being contrived: heavy tables, candlelight, stone walls. It caters to tourists but the food is genuine and the portions generous.
Prices are reasonable and it is usually possible to get a table without booking, though weekend evenings in summer can be busy. The lunch set menu offers the best value.
