Eagle's Nest Viewpoint

The Eagle's Nest (Orlinoye Gnezdo) is the hilltop viewpoint that gives the best panoramic view over Vladivostok, the Golden Horn Bay, and on clear days across the strait to the hills of Russky Island. The Russky Bridge and Golden Bridge (another large cable-stayed crossing) are both visible from here, as is the sweep of the city climbing its multiple peninsulas.

The funicular from the waterfront to the viewpoint is the quickest way up — a short, slightly rickety Soviet-era car that takes about two minutes. You can walk up the steps instead if the funicular is closed. The viewpoint itself has a few cafe kiosks in summer and a small chapel. The best light is in the late afternoon, when the bay catches the western sun.

A story
The name Orlinoye Gnezdo — Eagle's Nest — is a reference to an earlier, more dramatic name for the Golden Horn Bay itself. Vladivostok's founders named the bay after Istanbul's Golden Horn, and the surrounding hills after their Ottoman equivalents. The funicular connecting the bay to the hilltop viewpoint was built in 1962 and is one of only two funiculars operating in Russia today.
