Russky Bridge

The Russky Bridge is Vladivostok's modern landmark — a dramatic cable-stayed span that leaps across the Eastern Bosphorus strait to Russky Island. It is visible from much of the city and best appreciated from the waterfront or from the Eagle's Nest viewpoint, where the full scale of the structure is apparent against the bay.

Russky Island itself is worth visiting for a half-day excursion. The coastline is rugged and largely undeveloped, with a handful of beaches and the substantial remnants of the Vladivostok Fortress network — gun batteries, tunnels, and bunkers that were never fully completed before the military doctrine changed. The university campus has a contemporary science museum open to visitors.

A story
When Russky Bridge opened in 2012 for the APEC summit, it had the longest cable-stayed span in the world — 1,104 metres between its towers. It was built to connect the city to Russky Island, which had been a closed military zone for most of the Soviet era. The island is now home to Far Eastern Federal University, whose campus was built specifically for the summit.
