The ceremonial boulevard connecting the central square to the Volga Embankment, lined with busts of the Heroes of the Soviet Union who distinguished themselves in the Battle of Stalingrad. The wide, tree-lined avenue was designed as part of the post-war reconstruction of the city centre in the late 1940s and 1950s in the Stalinist neoclassical style.
Walking the Alley of Heroes from the centre to the embankment is one of the standard Volgograd itineraries — it links the main war memorial sites with the waterfront and gives a sense of the scale of the Stalinist city planning that replaced the rubble. The busts are individually unremarkable, but as a collective monument to the scale of the battle, the avenue is impressive.
