When to Go

Yakutsk has one of the most extreme continental climates on the planet. Winter temperatures regularly drop below minus 40 C, and the coldest recorded temperatures in the Sakha Republic have reached minus 60 C. Summer is brief but surprisingly warm, with temperatures climbing to plus 30 C or higher in July. That gives the region a staggering annual temperature range of nearly 100 degrees Celsius.

Summer (June to August) is the practical time to visit. Days are very long, the Lena River is navigable, and the city comes alive after months of deep winter. If you want to experience the cold that makes Yakutsk famous, January and February are the months — but come prepared with serious winter gear. The locals promise that even at minus 50, you will receive a warm welcome.
