Bubanj Memorial Park

Bubanj is the forested hillside southwest of Niš where the German occupiers executed an estimated 10,000 prisoners from the Crveni Krst concentration camp between 1941 and 1944. Today it is a memorial park, reached by a path through pine forest and dominated by three massive bronze fist sculptures on a raised platform.

The setting is sombre and appropriate — a quiet hillside with views over the city below, the three fists rising against the sky. There is also a flame monument and various commemorative inscriptions. The walk up from the road takes about twenty minutes through the woods.

Bubanj is usually visited in conjunction with the Crveni Krst camp, and together they make for a heavy but important morning. The camp documents what happened inside its walls; Bubanj is where those events ended. Both are within a few kilometres of each other and accessible by taxi from the city centre.

A story
The park's three fist-shaped sculptures — known locally as "three fists" — were designed by sculptor Ivan Sabolić and unveiled in 1963. Each fist represents one of the three groups most affected by the executions: Jewish victims, Romani victims, and political prisoners. The gesture of a raised fist was chosen to express defiance rather than defeat.
