Mediana is the largest Roman archaeological site near Niš, located about three kilometres east of the city on the road toward Skull Tower. This was the luxury suburb of ancient Naissus — a complex of imperial villas, baths, storehouses, and colonnaded walkways built in the 3rd and 4th centuries AD when Niš was one of the most important cities in the Roman Empire.
The site is only partially excavated, and what you see is a series of mosaic floors, column bases, wall foundations, and garden layouts spread across a grassy area. The mosaics are the highlights — some are impressively intact and give a real sense of the wealth that once resided here. There is a modest shelter over the most important sections.
Mediana is not as polished as Roman sites in Italy or France, and the presentation is fairly basic, but that actually works in its favour: you're wandering around a genuine Roman complex without a guided tour group in front of you. The site is open daily except Monday. Getting there requires a taxi or a fairly long walk along the main Bulevar Zorana Đinđića.
