Janko Kráľ Park

Janko Kráľ Park is a large urban park on a river island in Petržalka, directly across the Danube from the old town. The park is one of the oldest public parks in Central Europe, established in the 18th century on what was then a flood-prone island. Today it's a popular spot for Bratislava families and a good escape from the compact intensity of the old town.

The island is connected by footbridges at both ends and has several good spots for a riverside picnic. The park is particularly pleasant in spring when the chestnuts are in bloom. Walking the full length of the island takes about 45 minutes at a leisurely pace.

Cross into Petržalka for a walk through the largest socialist housing estate in Central Europe. The blocks are denser than they look from the old town, and the neighbourhood has developed its own cafes and local character. On a sunny weekend, the benches along the Danube in Petržalka are packed with locals enjoying the river views back toward the castle.

A story
Janko Kráľ Park, laid out on Petržalka island in the 18th century, claims to be the oldest public park in Central Europe — predating the Vienna Prater and other famous urban parks. The island is separated from the main bank by a narrow arm of the Danube and connected by footbridges, giving it a distinct quiet character even in summer.
