Veľká Fatra National Park

Veľká Fatra National Park begins essentially at Ružomberok's doorstep, making the town a practical base for exploring one of Slovakia's finest mountain areas. The park covers a range of limestone ridges and valleys extending roughly 60 km northeast of the town, with forested slopes rising to above 1,500 metres. The flora is rich — meadows full of mountain herbs, beech and fir forests, and limestone karst features including caves.

Marked hiking trails start from Malinô Brdo and from various trailheads along the Revúca valley south of Ružomberok. Day walks to Ploská (1,532 m) or the Borianska valley are accessible from the town. The park is quiet by comparison with the High Tatras — this is the right choice for walkers who prefer solitude over crowds.

A story
Veľká Fatra was declared a national park in 2002, but its forested limestone ranges have been protected in various forms since the 1970s. The park contains one of the largest contiguous forest ecosystems in central Europe, with brown bear, lynx, wolf, and capercaillie among its resident species. The bears are genuinely present — hikers are advised to make noise on the trails.
