Trnava's main square — Trojičné námestie, or Trinity Square — is the heart of the old town, a generous rectangular space dominated at one end by the City Tower and lined with baroque buildings that house cafes, restaurants, and shops. A Trinity Column stands at the centre, as in many central European cities, erected after a plague epidemic as a votive offering.
The square is fully pedestrianised and genuinely used by residents rather than being merely a tourist showcase. On weekday mornings there is a small market; on warm evenings the cafe terraces fill with students and locals. It is the natural base from which to explore the old town, and the starting point for most walking routes through the medieval centre.
