City Tower

The City Tower is the most distinctive landmark in Trnava's old town — a freestanding medieval tower on the main square that has been rebuilt and adapted over the centuries but retains an imposing presence. It stands at around 50 metres and is climbable, offering good views across the old town rooftops and the surrounding flat terrain.

The tower dates to the 14th century in its original form, though much of what you see today reflects later baroque modifications. The stone base and the upper gallery were added at different periods, giving it a layered quality that makes it interesting to study up close. The climb is modest and the view worth it for orientation when you first arrive.

A story
The tower has served as a watchtower, a prison, and a fire observation post over its centuries of existence. In the 17th century, when Trnava was the seat of the Hungarian Catholic Church and one of the most important cities in the region, the tower was the dominant landmark for travellers approaching across the flat surrounding plain.
