Church of Saint Stephen the King

The Church of Saint Stephen the King, standing alone in the Závodie district west of the city centre, is the oldest building in Žilina. The Romanesque church was built around the 12th century, making it five or six hundred years older than the Renaissance square in the old town. The structure has been modified over the centuries but retains its Romanesque character in the simple nave, the thick walls, and the small rounded windows.

The church is still in use as a parish church. It sits in a quiet cemetery surrounded by old linden trees, a peaceful contrast to the urban energy of the main square. It is a 20-minute walk or a short bus ride from the city centre. Worth the detour for anyone interested in the early medieval history of the region.

A story
The church is the oldest surviving building in Žilina, predating the town's medieval growth by at least two centuries. It was built as a Romanesque structure around the 12th century and later modified with Gothic elements. The surrounding village of Závodie, where the church stands, was absorbed into the growing city but the church remains isolated enough that it still feels like a country church that a city grew around it.
