Žilina is on the main railway line connecting Bratislava to Košice and the Czech Republic. Trains from Bratislava take about two hours; from Prague the journey is around four and a half hours with a direct InterCity service. The railway station is a ten-minute walk from the old town. By car, Žilina sits on the D1 motorway (the Slovak equivalent of the highway) connecting Bratislava to the east. The nearest international airports are Bratislava (M.R. Štefánik) and Ostrava in the Czech Republic, both about two hours away.
