St Martin's Parish Church

Neo-Gothic parish church beneath the castle cliff

The parish church of St Martin sits at the foot of the castle cliff, just back from the northeastern shore of the lake. The current building is a neo-Gothic reconstruction from 1905 on much older foundations — the original chapel here dates from the 9th century — and its single bell tower is a familiar element of the Bled skyline.

The interior is decorated with frescoes by the Slovenian painter Slavko Pengov, completed in the 1930s, depicting scenes from local religious history. The church is usually open during daylight hours; entry is free.
