A fairytale castle on a cliff, a crystal-clear lake with a tiny island church, snow-capped Julian Alps as a backdrop — Bled looks almost too picturesque to be real. It is Slovenia's most visited resort, about an hour by bus from Ljubljana, and it earns the attention.
Bled Castle perches on a sheer bluff above the north shore. The museum inside is modest, but the view from the terrace — straight down to the emerald lake, across to the mountains — is extraordinary. The island in the middle of the lake holds the Church of the Assumption (Cerkev Marijinega vnebovzetja); you reach it by pletna, the traditional flat-bottomed boats rowed by local oarsmen, or by renting a canoe and paddling yourself.
Lake Bled itself is small enough to walk around in two hours, warm enough to swim in during summer, and ringed by forested hills. The Vintgar Gorge, 4 km north of town, is a spectacular 1.6 km walk along boardwalks above the Radovna River — go early to beat the crowds. Nearby Lake Bohinj, 26 km southwest, is bigger, quieter, and wilder.
