Getting There

Air

Ljubljana Joze Pucnik Airport (LJU) is Slovenia's main international airport, about 25 km north of the capital. It handles flights from several European cities, though the selection is more limited than larger hubs. Wizz Air, Turkish Airlines, and Lufthansa are among the carriers serving Ljubljana.

Many travelers fly into nearby airports instead: Venice Marco Polo or Treviso (2-2.5 hours by road), Trieste (1.5 hours), Klagenfurt (1 hour), or Zagreb (2 hours). All have good ground connections to Slovenia.

From the airport to Ljubljana, a shuttle bus costs around 7-9 EUR and takes about 45 minutes. Taxis cost 20-30 EUR -- prebook through services like GoOpti or Airtrail for the best rates. There is also a public bus running hourly until 20:00 for about 4.50 EUR.

Rail

International trains connect Ljubljana to Vienna (6 hours), Venice (4 hours), Zagreb (2.5 hours), Budapest (8 hours), and other cities. The network is not the fastest but the routes, particularly toward the coast and through the mountains, are scenic.

Bus

FlixBus and other operators connect Ljubljana to Trieste, Venice, Zagreb, Vienna, and other cities. Buses are often cheaper and sometimes faster than trains for international routes.

Car

Slovenia is easily reached by road from Italy, Austria, Hungary, and Croatia. A motorway vignette (toll sticker) is required on all highways. E-vignettes can be purchased online in advance (evinjeta.dars.si) or at petrol stations and border crossings. A weekly vignette costs around 16 EUR.
