Visas
Slovenia is in the EU and the Schengen Area. Citizens of the EU, USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and many other countries can visit visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period.
Money
The currency is the Euro (EUR). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted. ATMs are available in all towns. Slovenia is moderately priced -- cheaper than Austria or Italy, but not a budget destination. A restaurant meal costs 10-20 EUR, a beer 2.50-4 EUR, and a coffee about 1.50-2.50 EUR. The average daily budget for a mid-range traveler is around 75-90 EUR.
Language
Slovenian is the official language. Italian is also official in the coastal area, and Hungarian in the northeast. Most Slovenians speak at least one foreign language -- English is widespread, particularly among younger people. German and Italian are also commonly understood. You will have few language problems as a tourist.
Safety
Slovenia is consistently ranked among the safest countries in the world. Violent crime is extremely rare, and petty crime is minimal even in Ljubljana. It is an excellent destination for solo travelers.
Water
Tap water is safe to drink everywhere and is of excellent quality. Slovenia takes pride in its water -- the right to clean drinking water is written into the constitution.
Electricity
Slovenia uses 230V with European two-pin plugs (Type C and Type F). UK and US travelers will need an adapter.
