Ljubljana Central Market (Plečnik's Market)

The covered market running along the right bank of the Ljubljanica between the Triple Bridge and the Dragon Bridge is one of Plečnik's most successful works in Ljubljana. A long colonnaded arcade fronts the river; behind it a roofed market hall sells vegetables, dairy, meat, and a good selection of Slovenian produce. The open-air market on Vodnik Square extends the indoor section on weekday mornings.

This is a working market, not a tourist spectacle. The best time to visit is Saturday morning, when farmers from the surrounding countryside bring their produce. You can buy raw milk, artisan cheese, honey, mushrooms in season, and local wine. The view from the colonnade across the river to the old town is one of the best in the city.

A story
The covered colonnaded market along the Ljubljanica riverbank was designed by Joze Plečnik in the 1940s and completed posthumously from his drawings. Plečnik modelled it loosely on the markets of ancient Greece and Rome. A milk vending machine in the market operates 24 hours a day, dispensing raw milk — a practical feature Plečnik could not have anticipated but would probably have approved of.
