City Museum of Ljubljana

The City Museum of Ljubljana occupies a former Auersperg palace in the old town, a short walk south of the Town Hall. The permanent collection traces the history of Ljubljana from the Roman city of Emona (established 14 AD) through the medieval, Habsburg, and modern periods. The Roman period is well documented: excavations under the courtyard have revealed the original Roman street level, visible through a glass floor.

The museum does good temporary exhibitions on Ljubljana history, architecture, and urban life. The courtyard is a pleasant space, and the museum shop has a reasonable selection of books on Slovenian history and architecture.
