Dragon Bridge (Zmajski most)

The Dragon Bridge, built in 1901, was one of the first reinforced concrete bridges in Europe. Four large bronze dragons guard its corners, each with a wingspan of several metres. The bridge spans the Ljubljanica one block north of the Triple Bridge and is best photographed from the bank below.

The dragons have become the symbol of the city. The bridge is part of a short riverside walk along the left bank, passing the outdoor market, the cathedral, and the Butchers' Bridge before looping back across the Triple Bridge.

A story
The four dragon statues on the corners of the Dragon Bridge were cast in Vienna in 1901. A popular Ljubljana myth holds that when a virgin crosses the bridge, the dragons wag their tails. The dragons have become the symbol of Ljubljana and appear on the city's coat of arms — though how and why a Central European city ended up with a dragon as its emblem is disputed among historians.
