Strelec ("The Archer") occupies a medieval tower in Ljubljana Castle, reached via the funicular or the castle walk. The setting — inside a stone tower with views over the city — is excellent. The kitchen focuses on Slovenian cuisine using local and seasonal ingredients: wild mushrooms from the forests above the city, freshwater fish, game in autumn, and good Slovenian wine.
The food is well above average and the prices reflect the setting and quality. Book ahead, particularly for dinner and on weekends. The lunch menu is simpler and more affordable. Even if you do not eat here, walking past the tower gives you a sense of how the restaurant uses the castle's medieval fabric.
