Plečnik House (Plečnikova hiša)

Joze Plečnik's home in the Trnovo district, south of the old town, is now a museum dedicated to the architect who shaped Ljubljana's twentieth-century identity. The house contains Plečnik's studio, library, furniture, and personal effects, preserved much as they were when he died in 1957. Guided tours take about 45 minutes and give an unusually intimate picture of how the architect lived and worked.

The house is small and tours are limited in number; booking in advance is strongly recommended. The Trnovo neighbourhood around it — with the small Trnovo church, the Grubar Canal embankment, and Plečnik's Trnovo Bridge — is itself a pleasant area for a walk.

A story
Plečnik lived and worked in this house from 1921 until his death in 1957 — for 36 years, during which he transformed Ljubljana's public spaces more thoroughly than any other architect in the city's history. He added a cylindrical studio tower to the original building, connected to the house by a glass corridor. He rarely left Ljubljana during these years, turning down commissions from abroad in order to continue his work on the city he considered his life's project.
