Snežna Jama (Snow Cave)

Snežna Jama is a karst cave at over 1500 metres altitude on the plateau above the Logar Valley. It is one of the highest tourist caves in Slovenia and one of the most unusual — its low year-round temperature means stalactites of ice form in winter and survive well into summer, creating an otherworldly frozen interior alongside the usual limestone formations.

Access is via a steep hiking trail from the Logar Valley or from the Golte ski area above. Guided tours of the cave run in summer (July and August) and take around an hour. Warm clothing is essential — the cave is cold enough in August to make a fleece feel justified. The plateau around the cave entrance also offers excellent views over the Kamnik-Savinja Alps.

A story
The cave earned its name because snow and ice persist inside through most of the summer — the temperature at the entrance hovers around 1°C even in July, and visitors in summer clothes are regularly caught off guard.
