The Museum of Almería holds the principal archaeological collection for the province, and it is a good one: the excavations at Los Millares, a site outside the city that was one of the most advanced Copper Age settlements in all of Europe, produced material that challenges comfortable assumptions about prehistoric Iberia. The displays cover everything from Palaeolithic remains through Phoenician trade goods, the extensive Moorish period, and the Christian reconquest.
The building itself is modern and well designed — unusual among Spanish regional museums — with clear signage and good contextual information. The prehistoric rooms are the highlight, particularly the material from Los Millares, but the Islamic section is also worth time, reflecting the period when Almería was a major city of al-Andalus. The museum is centrally located and admission is free for EU citizens.
