Faro de Chipiona (Lighthouse)

The Faro de Chipiona dominates the western end of the town — a tapering grey-and-white tower visible from miles up the coast and out at sea. The lighthouse keeper still gives tours on Saturday afternoons (and most days in summer); the climb up the 322 spiral steps to the lamp gallery is steep but the reward is one of the best coastal panoramas in southern Spain — Sanlúcar across the river mouth, Doñana on the northern bank, the salt flats of Cádiz Bay to the south.

Bring a small head for heights. Tickets are sold on the day at the gatehouse; no advance booking required.

A story
At 69 metres, the Faro de Chipiona is the tallest lighthouse in Spain and the third tallest in the world. It was completed in 1867 to warn ships off the Salmedina shoals, the same submerged reef where Columbus's flagship Santa María nearly foundered in 1493. The original Fresnel lens still works.
