Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Regla

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Regla is Chipiona's spiritual centre — a Franciscan monastery on the seafront, founded in the fourteenth century, rebuilt in neo-gothic style in the nineteenth, and home to a small wooden statue of the Virgin that is the object of one of the most attended pilgrimages in Andalucía. On the second Sunday of September the streets of Chipiona fill with pilgrims from across the south, many on horseback, for the Romería de la Virgen de Regla.

The church itself is open daily for visits — the cloister and the small monastic museum upstairs are worth twenty minutes. The "agua milagrosa" (miraculous water) from the fountain in the cloister is the source of the tradition that brings older Spaniards here "para tomar las aguas" — to take the waters.
