The hilltop village of Manilva sits about 2 km inland from the coast, its whitewashed houses rising over vineyards and citrus groves. The views from the church terrace are exceptional: on a clear day you can see the Rock of Gibraltar to the southwest and, beyond the Strait, the mountains of northern Morocco. The village is quiet, genuinely un-touristy, and makes a sharp contrast to the marina below. The local Moscatel grape — a sweet white used mostly for raisins and dessert wine — grows on the terraced hillsides around the village; a small cooperative sells bottles directly. The 16th-century parish church of San Luis Rey de Francia anchors the main square.
