Parque Maria Luisa

Seville's grand shaded park beside Plaza de Espana and the 1929 exposition pavilions

Parque Maria Luisa is Seville's great green pause, a broad park of palms, fountains, tiled benches, and shaded paths beside Plaza de Espana. Much of its present form comes from the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition, and the surrounding pavilions still give the park a festive, slightly theatrical character.

It is most useful in the hours when Seville's stone streets become punishingly hot. Wander without too strict a plan: ponds, ceramic details, orange trees, and little monuments keep appearing. The park also links several sights, so it works as both a destination and a humane way to move through the southern side of the historic centre.
