Plaza de España

Seville's most jaw-dropping public space was built for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition and it still has the power to stop you in your tracks. The vast semicircular plaza curves around a canal where you can rent rowboats, its walls lined with 52 tiled alcoves — one for each Spanish province — depicting scenes from their history in gorgeous painted ceramics. The blend of Renaissance Revival and Moorish styles is pure Andalucía. Come early morning to beat the crowds and catch the light on the brickwork, or at dusk when the whole thing glows amber. Free to visit, endlessly photogenic.
