Plaza de la Universidad

The Plaza de la Universidad is the social heart of Huesca's old town, a broad square lined on one side by the former university buildings — a dignified Renaissance ensemble built in the 16th and 17th centuries when Huesca had one of the significant universities in the Crown of Aragon. The main building's facade is a fine example of Aragonese Renaissance, restrained and well-proportioned.

The university buildings now house the Museum of Huesca, which covers the city's history from prehistoric times through the modern period. The permanent collection includes Roman artifacts from the city's period as Osca, medieval objects, and fine art. The square itself has outdoor terraces that are pleasantly animated on weekend evenings.

A story
Huesca's university was founded in 1354 by Pedro IV of Aragon, making it one of the oldest in Spain. It operated continuously until 1845, when a 19th-century reform merged most Spanish provincial universities into central institutions — Zaragoza absorbed Huesca's faculty. The handsome Renaissance buildings on the plaza, built in the 16th and 17th centuries when the university was at its peak, survived and now house a museum and cultural centre.
