The Basque Centre-Museum of Contemporary Art opened in 2002 in a converted bus station at the edge of the old town. The permanent collection is built around late 20th-century Basque art — Oteiza, Chillida, Tàpies, Equipo Crónica — and the temporary programme is strong, regularly showing major international names.
The building, by José Luis Catón, sinks most of its galleries below ground around a vast skylit hall, so the architecture is more interesting from inside than outside. Wednesdays are free entry; the museum café is good for lunch.
