Laguardia, a walled medieval town in the heart of Rioja Alavesa wine country, is 45 minutes south and the obvious wine-tasting day out. The villages of the Cantabrian range south of the city — Salinas de Añana with its terraced salt pans, Quejana with its painted Gothic chapel — make a different kind of day. The painted cliffs and prehistoric caves of the Valle de Valdegovía are an hour west. Bigger trips reach Bilbao and the Guggenheim or San Sebastián for La Concha beach.
