Vitoria-Gasteiz has its own small airport (Foronda) about 8 km north of the city, with limited scheduled flights and a busy cargo operation. Most visitors fly into Bilbao (about an hour by road) or San Sebastián (also an hour) and continue by bus or train.
By train, Renfe runs services from Madrid (about four hours via Burgos), Barcelona, and along the northern coast. A new high-speed line — the so-called "Y Vasca" — is under construction to connect Vitoria with Bilbao and San Sebastián in around 30 minutes; check current status before booking. The Alsa intercity bus station is at the southern edge of the centre and runs frequent services to Bilbao, San Sebastián, Logroño, and Madrid.
By road, the AP-1 motorway runs from Burgos in Castile to Bilbao on the coast, passing Vitoria. The N-1 from Madrid via Burgos brings you in from the south.
