Cathedral of María Inmaculada (New Cathedral)

The newer of Vitoria's two cathedrals was begun in 1907 in a neo-Gothic style and consecrated in 1969 — one of the last great Gothic-style cathedrals built anywhere in the world. The exterior is honey-coloured limestone with a 100-metre tower; the interior is vast, austere, and entirely lacking in clutter, which lets the height and the stained glass do the work.

The crypt houses the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art (Museo de Arte Sacro), worth a visit for its medieval and baroque sculpture and the temporary art exhibitions it hosts. The plaza in front, the Parque de la Florida, makes a pleasant stroll afterwards.
