Plaza de España (Plaza Nueva)

A handsome neoclassical square laid out in 1781, with a continuous arcade running on all four sides. It was built as a market square and a place for civic gatherings; it now houses the town hall on the south side and bars and cafés under the arcades.

The square is at its best on a sunny morning, when locals gather under the colonnade for coffee, and during the city's festivals when concerts and dancing fill the space. It is officially called Plaza de España but everyone calls it Plaza Nueva.
