Salburua Wetlands

A large restored wetland on the eastern edge of the city, part of the Anillo Verde and a major bird stop on the Atlantic flyway. Wooden walkways and hides let you observe storks, herons, harriers, and a population of European deer reintroduced as part of the restoration.

The Ataria visitor centre at the entrance has exhibits on the wetland and binoculars to borrow. A flat 4.5-kilometre loop circles the lakes — easy walking and good for bicycles.

A story
Salburua was drained in the 19th century for farming and remained dry agricultural land until the late 1990s, when the city deliberately restored the wetland — and the storks, herons, and a Iberian deer population promptly returned.
