El Pozo de la Aguada

El Pozo de la Aguada — the Well of Watering — is a simple stone well in a small courtyard near the waterfront, easy to miss if you don't know to look for it. It marks the spot where Columbus's fleet filled its water barrels before setting out westward in September 1492, and its historical significance far outweighs its modest appearance.

The well sits on the site of the original Peraza family residence, now occupied by a small interpretive space. A short walk from both the Torre del Conde and the Iglesia de la Asunción, it completes the Columbus circuit of the town and gives San Sebastián a claim few other places on earth can make: that the water drawn here helped keep the crew of the Santa María alive long enough to discover the Americas.

A story
A plaque on the well records that Columbus's ships drew water from this source in September 1492, the last fresh water the fleet would take on before crossing the Atlantic. The well has been used continuously since the 15th century; it still holds water today, though the town now has a modern supply.
