La Calera is the oldest part of the Valle Gran Rey settlement, perched on a ledge high on the valley wall with views across the entire valley and out to sea. The village predates the beach communities and retains a more traditional Canarian character — whitewashed houses, narrow stone lanes, and older residents who have lived here through the decades of change.
The approach by road from below is dramatic, switchbacking up the valley side past terraced gardens. The views from the village across the valley are among the best in the western Canaries — the full depth of the landscape is visible from here, from the mountain forest at the top to the black beach at the bottom. Several restaurants and cafes in La Calera serve Canarian food and make use of the extraordinary setting.
