The Plaza de la Constitución is the heart of Teguise and where almost every visit to the village begins. The square is broad, paved in dark volcanic stone, and ringed by the most important buildings in town: the parish church on the north side, the Palacio Spínola opposite, and the seventeenth-century Caja General de Ahorros building, once the island's tithe-collection point. Cafés put out tables along the south edge for as much shade as the Canary sun allows.
The plaza is at its liveliest on Sunday morning, when the weekly market spills out across it and into every adjoining street. Outside of market days it is quiet — a place to sit with a coffee and watch nothing much happen.
