The Parque Rural de Anaga covers the ancient mountain range that dominates the northeastern tip of Tenerife, just above La Laguna. It is one of the most biologically important areas in the Canary Islands — the laurisilva, or laurel forest, that covers the higher ridges is a relic of the subtropical forest that once covered the Mediterranean basin, preserved in Tenerife by a combination of altitude, cloud, and relative isolation. The trees are often completely enveloped in mist and hung with moss and ferns, giving the forest a primeval atmosphere quite unlike anything else in Spain.
The park has an extensive network of waymarked trails ranging from short walks to full-day hikes along the ridge to remote fishing villages on the north coast. The Mirador Cruz del Carmen, accessible by road from La Laguna in about 20 minutes, is a good starting point with a visitor centre and views in clear weather over both coasts. More experienced walkers head to the ridge paths that link the valleys; some trails descend to the sea at Taganana or Almáciga on the rugged north coast. Bring a waterproof — the clouds can roll in quickly.
