Bishop's Palace

Gaudi-designed episcopal palace in Astorga, now a museum beside the cathedral.

Astorga's Bishop's Palace is one of Antoni Gaudi's great surprises outside Catalonia, a neo-Gothic fantasy of pale stone, turrets, and pointed arches beside the cathedral. It looks part castle, part ecclesiastical dream, and it gives this small city a startling architectural jolt.

The interior now houses a museum, but the building itself is the main event. Walk around it slowly before going in; the best pleasure is seeing how Gaudi adapted medieval language into something theatrical and unmistakably his own.
