El Bierzo is a valley, not a city, so its highlights are spread out and best explored by car. The Roman gold-mining landscape of Las Médulas is the obvious headline, but the Camino de Santiago through Villafranca and the Templar history of Ponferrada are easily as compelling, and the wine country between them rewards a slow drive.
