El Bierzo has a microclimate that is gentler than the surrounding Castilian plateau: summers are warm rather than scorching, winters are cool but not bitter, and rainfall is moderate. Pilgrims walk through year-round, but for ordinary visitors the best months are late September and October, when the chestnut and oak forests of Las Médulas turn red and gold and the wine harvest is in full swing.
May and June are also pleasant, with long days and wildflowers in the valley meadows. Winter is quiet and damp; many of the smaller wineries and rural restaurants close on weekdays from January to March. If you can time a visit for the Fiesta del Botillo in February or the wine harvest festivals in September, do.
