With 30,000 students in a city of 150,000, Salamanca has a bar culture well out of proportion to its size. The evening paseo fills the streets around Plaza Mayor from around 8pm; the student bars south of the square get going after 11pm and run until the small hours. The Gran Vía and the streets between the two cathedrals and the Plaza Mayor have a denser concentration of cafés for daytime use.
