Day Trips

Sitges is so close to Barcelona that it is itself the day trip for most visitors. But it makes an equally good base for exploring the coast and inland Catalonia.

The Garraf Natural Park starts on the western edge of town — a half-day of clifftop walks, cave-riddled limestone hills, and the Celler Güell wine cellar designed by Gaudí. Vilanova i la Geltrú, the bigger town just south, has the excellent Balaguer railway museum. Inland, Vilafranca del Penedès is the centre of the Penedès wine region; bodega visits to Codorníu and Freixenet are 30 minutes away. Tarragona, with its remarkable Roman amphitheatre and aqueduct, is an hour south on the regional train.
