Parador de Cambados

Spain's parador network occupies a 17th-century pazo ruin overlooking the Ría de Arousa

The Parador de Cambados occupies the remains of the 17th-century Pazo de Bazán, a manor house that fell into ruin and was later incorporated into the national parador network. The building wraps around a large stone courtyard planted with greenery, and the position is superb — the estuary views from the garden and the upper terrace take in the full width of the Ría de Arousa on clear days. Even if you are not staying here, the courtyard and bar are worth visiting.

The architecture is typical of the great Galician pazos: thick granite walls, corner towers, and a sober dignity that owes nothing to Castilian or Andalusian influence. The parador's restaurant makes a point of the local Albariño wines and Galician seafood, and the setting — stone arches, linen tablecloths, views to the estuary — is far more atmospheric than the average hotel dining room. Staying the night means waking up to the ría, which is not a bad start to a day in wine country.
