Arde Lucus Festival

Arde Lucus is Lugo's annual festival celebrating the city's Roman and Celtic heritage, held in the last weeks of June since 2001. It was created to mark the UNESCO World Heritage designation of the Roman walls and has grown into one of the largest historical reenactment events in Spain. The entire old town is transformed: residents and visitors dress in Roman togas or Celtic clothing, military encampments fill the parks inside the walls, and gladiator fights, chariot races, and Celtic wedding ceremonies are staged across the city.

The festival runs over several days and involves thousands of participants, making it genuinely immersive rather than a tourist spectacle. Open-air banquets, Roman-era markets, and a nightly siege reenactment with fireworks are among the highlights. If you are anywhere in Galicia in late June, timing a visit to Lugo around Arde Lucus adds a dimension that ordinary sightseeing can't replicate.

A story
The name means "Burn Lugo" — a reference to the bonfires lit at the festival, not an act of arson. In 2009, Arde Lucus drew 460,000 visitors to a town of 98,000 people, generating around ten million euros in local income. It was designated a Fiesta of International Tourist Interest in 2023.
