Construction of Lugo's cathedral began in 1129, producing a Romanesque-Gothic core that accumulated layers from subsequent centuries. The North Door belongs to the original Romanesque phase and carries fine sculptural detail. A Renaissance choir was added in the 17th century alongside the high altarpiece; the cloister and the Chapel of the Virxe dos Ollos Grandes (Our Lady of the Big Eyes) date from the 17th and 18th centuries. The cathedral holds a rare continuous Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament — a privilege granted centuries ago and maintained uninterrupted ever since.
