Built between 260 and 310 AD, Lugo's Roman wall is unique in Europe: it is the only one that retains its full original perimeter of more than two kilometres. The wall stands between 8 and 12 metres high and is reinforced by over 70 of the original 85 round turrets. Ten gates pierce the circuit — four of Roman origin, the rest opened as the city grew over the centuries. A sentry path runs the full length of the top, offering sweeping views over the old city, the Miño river valley and the hills beyond.
Roman Wall
The only Roman wall in the world with its full perimeter intact
A story
On 30 November 2000, UNESCO declared the Roman Wall of Lugo a World Heritage Site — the only Roman wall in the world that still conserves its entire perimeter intact. In the year 2000 a community project called "Cumulum" surrounded the wall with more than 500,000 donated books, which were later distributed to organisations in Latin America.
